古くより、写真において、ボケによる表現をもっとも好むのは日本人であり、他の民族はそのようなテクニックをほとんど用いないといわれてきた。 英語で”Bokeh”という単語が用いられるようになったのは「遅くとも2000年から」と英語版（en:Bokeh）にあるので、きわめて新しい表現手法として受け止められていると考えられる。 また、アニメにおいても (たとえばドラえもんのようなコミカルな作品においても) ピントを順次、複数の対象に合わせて変えてゆくような、ボケを積極的に利用した表現が見られる。
